One of the earliest Latin translations of Homer’s epic poem, translated from the Greek by Roman Hellenic scholar Raphaello Maffei (Raphael of Volterra). Quarto, bound in contemporary vellum, rebacked, woodcut titles and printer’s device to the title page and at end of text. From the library of Robert R. Dearden, Jr. of Philadelphia with his bookplate to the front panel. American bibliophile and author Robert R. Dearden was known for his extensive rare bible collection with a focus on early editions of American Bibles. He authored the book The Guiding Light on the Great Highway (1929), elaborately illustrated with photographs of his collection. Minor wear and a few small repairs to the title page. A very good example of this important work which has survived over five centuries.

Vols. I and II lacking the half-titles as usual. Provenance: John Hope (1868-1936) with his stamp to the title pages. Ownership signatures of Henry Schwab. In very good condition. Housed in a custom slipcase. An excellent example of this typographic gem.

An uncommonly early original drawing of Homer Simpson by David Silverman, and a production booklet for the classic Simpsons episode, ‘Jacques to be Wild,’ the first episode to win an Emmy for the longest-running show on television. Early pencil sketch of Homer Simpson exclaiming “Doh!” as he conducts Bartok’s Concerto for Orchestra, sketch inscribed and dated by the artist, “Homer Conducts Bartok’s Concerto for Orchestra – The Snare Drum is Off — 5/17/91 David Silverman.” In near fine condition with some loss to the bottom edge, likely the result of being torn out a sketchbook. The piece measures 8.25 inches by 10.63 inches. Additionally with production booklet for The Simpsons Season 1 Episode 9, ‘Jacques to be Wild,’ renamed ‘Life on the Fast Lane,’ title leaf with table of contents, illustrated with twenty-nine photocopy leaves of drawings of Homer, Marge and Bart Simpson, as well as minor characters and various objects from the episode. In near fine condition. The piece measures 8.5 inches by 14 inches. Rare.

Two rare Grand Street Publications separate printings of Books III and XVIII of Robert Fagles’ renowned translation of Homer’s Iliad. Octavo, two volumes. Association copy, inscribed by author on the front panel of Book XVIII, “Charles and Brenda – Wonderful to have you back in Princeton with us – Love, Bob.” The recipient, Charles Tomlinson, was a prolific English poet, translator, academic, and illustrator who taught for thirty-six years in the English Department of Bristol University, where he became Emeritus Professor. Tomlinson was an authoritative translator of poetry from the Russian, Spanish and Italian, including work by Antonio Machado, Fyodor Tyutchev, César Vallejo, and Attilio Bertolucci. He collaborated with Octavio Paz, Jacques Roubaud and Edoardo Sanguinetti in the writing of Renga, and with Paz alone in the writing of Airborn/Hijos del Aire. He edited The Oxford Book of Verse in English Translation and the Selected Poems of William Carlos Williams. In fine condition. A very unique example linking two great translators.
