First edition of this memoir from one of the most well regarded generals, “oft-consulted and much-quoted reminiscences … Sherman wrote as he fought; dynamically and bluntly” (Nevins II, 89). Octavo, bound in publishers three quarters morocco over marbled boards, gilt titles to the spine, illustrated. Presentation copy, inscribed by General Sherman three times: on the front free endpaper of Vol. I, “Mrs. E.J. Lynch Presented by Gen. W.T. Sherman 1876 New York City”; on the front free endpaper of Vol. II, “Mrs. E.J. Lynch Presented by Gen. W.T. Sherman 18”; and the second free endpaper of Vol. II, “Mrs. Eleanor D. Lynch New York 1876 Presented by General Sherman to Mrs Lynch By order.” The recipient, Eleanor D. Lynch of New York City, was the mother-in-law of Brigadier General J. Worden Pope, and “had many friends in the Army.” With Eleanor Lynch’s ownership signature to the second free endpaper of Vol I. In very good condition, small loss to the folding map. Signed examples of Sherman’s memoirs are rare, with only a handful of examples appearing at auction of the trade edition, with no publishers morocco ever appearing, desirable signed and inscribed three times.

St. Louis, Missouri: May 21, 1885.
Autograph letter signed by William T. Sherman to the widowed Mary Audenried, whom he is rumored to have had a decade-long affair with. In this personal letter, William T. Sherman advises Mary Audenried, the widow of his former aide-de-camp Joseph C. Audenried, on how to manage her underage daughter’s restless behavior. He shares that his wife and daughter may be leaving town and mentions the name of a local hotel, possibly hinting at a rendezvous. One page, bifolium, large duodecimo, the letter reads in part, “It is of hard course that one so loving as you should be lonely but you have all round you kindred spirits to share your loneliness, and may, I suppose, at any moment regain your peace in your mother’s house in Philadelphia.” In near fine condition with mail folds and very light toning.

Octavo, 2 volumes, original cloth, tissue-guarded frontispiece portrait of William T. Sherman, illustrated with folding maps in each volume, his son Philemon Tecumseh Sherman’s bookplate to the front pastedown of each volume. In near fine condition with light rubbing to the exterior, splitting to the interior front hinge of both volumes. Philemon Tecumseh Sherman transferred his library to his niece, Eleanor Sherman Fitch, before he died. Eleanor was the granddaughter of General Sherman through his eldest daughter, Maria “Minnie” Ewing Sherman Fitch. Until now, the books were held at the family estate in Washington County, Pennsylvania.

Octavo, one page, the letter reads in full, “Please come to our Parlor 22 say at 1/2 past seven this evening, and join Lizzie & me for a good box at Barnum’s Circus. I send this by a messenger who will bring an answer if you are at home.” In fine condition with mail folds. Double matted and framed with a photograph of General Sherman and a commemorative plaque. The entire piece measures 16.5 inches by 13.75 inches.

Small quarto, bound in full deluxe red morocco stamped in blind with gilt titles and ruling to the spine in six compartments within raised bands, gilt centerpiece, gilt inner dentelles, all edges gilt, marbled endpapers, tissue-guarded frontispiece portrait of General Sherman, illustrated with tissue-guarded portraits and drawings of society badges. General Sherman and his son’s bookplates to the front pastedown. Inscribed on the front flyleaf to General Sherman, “Respectfully Presented to W.T. Sherman General of the United States Army with the Compliments of the Chicago Executive Committee Chicago Dec 20, 1869.” In near fine condition with some rubbing to the extremities. General Sheman’s library was inherited by Philemon Tecumseh Sherman, who transferred the library to his niece, Eleanor Sherman Fitch, before he died. Sherman’s booklates to the front pastedown. Association copy, inscribed by the author on the front flyleaf, “General W.T. Sherman with the compliments of George W. Fields February 1890.” In very good condition with light rubbing, inscription in pencil to the front panel listing the pages with General Sherman’s mentions in the book. General Sherman’s library was inherited by P. T. Second volume of the first edition of this history of Ancient Woodbury, the location of the Sherman family’s initial establishment in early 1673; from the library of General William Tecumseh Sherman. Octavo, original publisher’s cloth, illustrated with coats of arms from the Graham and Sherman family. General Sherman and his son Philemon Tecumseh Sherman’s bookplates to the front pastedown. Presentation copy, inscribed by Roger M. Sherman on the flyleaf to Ellen Sherman, “Mrs. General Sherman with the compliments of Roger M. Sherman.” The recipient, Eleanor Boyle Ewing Sherman was the wife of General William Tecumseh Sherman and a prominent pro-Union figure before and during the Civil War. The inscriber was likely a descendant of the Founding Father Roger Sherman, the only person to sign all four great state papers of the United States: the Continental Association, the Declaration of Independence, the Articles of Confederation, and the Constitution. In very good condition.
