When Peter Benchley wrote Jaws in the early 1970s, he meticulously researched all available data about shark behavior, resulting in the classic work. “A tightly written, tautly paced study of terror [that] makes us tingle" (The Washington Post). Made into the blockbuster motion picture directed by Steven Spielberg starring Roy Scheider, Robert Shaw, Richard Dreyfuss, Murray Hamilton, and Lorraine Gary. In 2001, Jaws was selected by the Library of Congress for preservation in the United States National Film Registry, being deemed "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant".
