CAPOTE, Truman.
Item Number: 117207
New York: Random House, 1958.
First edition of Capote’s seductive, wistful masterpiece. Octavo, original cloth. Association copy, inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper to Aristotle Onassis’ first wife, Athina Livanos Onassis in the year of publication, “for Darling Athina from her greatest admirer; with love and tenderness Truman Paris, 1958.” The recipient, Athina “Tina” Livanos Onassis, was the second daughter of Greek shipping magnate Stavros Livanos and the first wife of Aristotle Onassis. After her divorce from Onassis in 1960, she married John Spencer-Churchill, 11th Duke of Marlborough whom she subsequently divorced in 1971 to marry her older sister Eugenia’s widower, Stavros Niarchos. She was a friend of Capote’s and a member of the post world world II jet set. Near fine in a very good dust jacket with light expert restoration. Jacket design by Ismar David. An exceptional association.
"Truman Capote is the most perfect writer of my generation. He writes the best sentences word for word, rhythm upon rhythm. If you want to capture a period in New York, no other book has done it so well. He could capture period and place like few others" (Norman Mailer). The 1961 film adaptation was directed by Blake Edwards, starring Audrey Hepburn and George Peppard.
