Loosely based on the Hindu sacred text the Bhagavad Gita and set in the midst of the Great Depression, Pressfield's The Legend of Bagger Vance tells the story of a 36-hole showdown between Bobby Jones, Walter Hagen, and a a troubled local war hero named R. Junuh with a mysterious mentor and caddie, Bagger Vance. The book was adapted into a film of the same name directed by Robert Redford, starring Will Smith, Matt Damon, and Charlize Theron.
