Pre-Raphaelite painter Charles Allston Collins abandoned art in the 1850s to follow in the footsteps of his older brother, novelist Wilkie Collins. His most successful literary works were humorous essays collected together under the title The Eye Witness (1860) and in 1860, Collins married Charles Dickens' daughter Kate, and was later engaged to illustrate Dickens' unfinished novel The Mystery of Edwin Drood.
