Set in Cornwall during the reign of Charles II, du Maurier's 1941 novel Frenchman's Creek tells the story of a love affair between impulsive English lady, Dona, Lady St. Columb, and French pirate, Jean-Benoit Aubéry. In 1944, it was adapted into the film of the same name starring Joan Fontaine, Arturo de Córdova, and Basil Rathbone as Rockingham.
