Tanglewood Tales. Illustrated by Edmund Dulac.

HAWTHORNE, Nathaniel; Illustrations by Edmund Dulac.

Item Number: 129234

London: Hodder and Stoughton , c. 1918.

First edition of this work, with illustrations by Edmund Dulac. Quarto, original cloth, dark red centaurs and brown lettering and decorations to the front panel, illustrated endpapers, illustrated with 14 plates. In near fine condition.

After a mediterranean cruise, Dulac was inspired to shift his attention to stories from the Greek myths and spent four years working on Tanglewood. His plates for "Argonauts" and "Europa" are considered to be among his best, his friend W.B. Yeats remarking that "Europa" was "particularly beautiful." Dulac would also continue to expand on the centaur theme begun here, and Yeats would later give one of his poems the title, "On a Picture of a Black Centaur by Edmund Dulac."
