Item Number: 129473
Boston: Little, Brown and Company, 1971.
First edition of Wouk’s masterpiece of historical fiction, a sweeping epic of World War II is the great novel of America’s Greatest Generation. Octavo, original half cloth. Association copy, lengthily inscribed by the author in the year of publication on the half-title page, “For Adeline and Lee in enduring friendship and with special thanks to Lee for his wise counsel on this as on all my work. Affectionately Herman 10/18/71.”The recipient Lee Barker and his wife Adeline were close friends of the author and he was his editor at Doubleday. Near fine in a very good dust jacket.
Published in 1971, it was followed up seven years later by War and Remembrance; originally conceived as one volume, Wouk decided to break it in two when he realized it took nearly 1000 pages just to get to the attack on Pearl Harbor. In 1983, it became a highly successful miniseries on the ABC television network.
