English poet and polemicist John Milton was active during a time of religious flux and political upheaval and became best known for his epic poem Paradise Lost written in blank verse. Writing in English, Latin, Greek, and Italian, he achieved international renown during his lifetime and introduced many new words to the English language. In his 1796 biography, William Hayley referred to him as the "greatest English author", and he remains generally regarded "as one of the preeminent writers in the English language."
