Item Number: 134591

New York: The British Library of Information, 1941.

First edition and only printing of Churchill’s January 9, 1941 speech to the Pilgrim Society celebrating Edward Halifax’s appointment as British Ambassador to the United States. Octavo, original wrappers. In fine condition.

After the Marquess of Lothian's sudden death in December 1940, Churchill offered the position of Ambassador to the United States to Halifax, with the proviso that he could still attend meetings of the War Cabinet when he was home on leave in London. After Halifax's initial hesitation, Churchill persuaded him to take the position and he set sail for the still neutral United States in January 1941 where he was welcomed in person by Franklin Delano Roosevelt. Although he kept a low profile, Halifax's relations with Roosevelt proved effective and the partnership between the two countries during World War II proved as close as any other such partnership.
