Finely bound new edition of Muller’s classic history of the literature of Ancient Greece. Octavo, bound in full polished calf, gilt titles and tooling to the spine in six compartments within raised gilt bands, morocco spine label lettered in gilt, double gilt ruling to the front and rear panels, gilt turn-ins and inner dentelles, all edges marbled, marbled endpapers. Translated from the German by George Cornwall Lewis. In very good condition. Period ownership inscription and armorial bookplate.

German scholar and Philodorian Karl Otfried Müller introduced the modern study of Greek mythology and literature with several important scholarly works including his Prolegomena zu einer wissenschaftlichen Mythologie (1825) and history of Greek literature, which in 1841 appeared posthumously as Geschichte der griechischen Litteratur bis auf das Zeitalter Alexanders (4th ed., revised and continued by Heitz, 1882–84). It was translated into English from the author's manuscript as History of the Literature of Ancient Greece and published the previous year in London.
