"War is an imperialist symptom, and it is no coincidence that the greatest period of British imperial rule also fathered the three greatest war correspondents in the history of journalism. In this triumvirate, Churchill has some claim to be considered primus inter pares. Emotions about Churchill can still run high, and many will reject the claim; but on an objective basis, it must be conceded that his war despatches during this limited period rank among his greatest writings. When it is considered that he was still in his early twenties when he wrote them, the achievement should be seen in true perspective" (Frederick Woods, Introduction).
