Wild took over command of the fateful Shackleton–Rowett Expedition upon Shackleton's death and completed the journey to Elephant Island and along the Antarctic coast, combating unfavorable weather en route. The expedition returned to Plymouth harbor on September 16, 1922, one year after its initial departure. Shortly thereafter, Wild published this account, which reproduces some of the last photographs of Shackleton.
