Official NASA photograph of ‘Earthrise.’ Glossy, color photograph of the Earth as seen from space by the Apollo 8 crew after performing lunar orbit insertion burn, NASA caption text and Kodak watermarks to the verso of the photograph, signed by Frank Borman in silver ink, “Frank Borman Apollo 8 CDR,” and James Lovell, “James Lovell Apollo 8 CMP,” who additionally signed “Earthrise, Christmas 1968” above his signature. In fine condition with fading to the NASA text on the verso. The piece measures 10 inches by 8 inches.
Wth William Anders, Apollo 8 astronauts James Lovell and Frank Borman were some of the first humans to witness an Earthrise. Apollo 8 launched on December 21, 1968, and was the second crewed spaceflight mission flown in the United States Apollo space program after Apollo 7, which stayed in Earth orbit. Apollo 8 was the third flight and the first crewed launch of the Saturn V rocket, and was the first human spaceflight from the Kennedy Space Center, located adjacent to Cape Kennedy Air Force Station in Florida.
