A rare pair of photographs of Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip. Two 8 inch by 6.12 inch portrait photographs of Queen Elizabeth dressed in an off-shoulder ballroom dress with the Riband and Star of the Order of the Garter across her chest and the Diamond Diadem upon her head and Prince Philip dressed as an Admiral of the Fleet, matte-finish gelatin silver prints, signed and dated on the card mount in fountain pen by the Queen and Prince below their respective portraits, “Elizabeth R 1954” and “Philip 1954.” Housed in fine blue leather presentation frames by H. H. Plante, each bearing royal crests. In near fine condition with light rubbing to the presentation frames. Each piece measures 11.5 by 9 inches in total. Photograph of the Queen and photograph of the Prince by Dorothy Wilding and Baron Studies, respectively. A superb pair of portraits from early in the Queen’s reign.

The longest-lived and longest-reigning British monarch, and the longest-serving female head of state in world history, Queen Elizabeth II ascended the throne at the age of 25 on February 6, 1952, upon the death of her father, King George VI. She was proclaimed queen by her various privy and executive councils shortly afterwards. The coronation took place more than a year later on June 2, 1953 because of the tradition that holding such a festival is inappropriate during the period of mourning that follows the death of a monarch. Elizabeth met her future husband, Prince Philip of Greece and Denmark, in 1934 and 1937. They were married on November 20, 1947 at Westminster Abbey and received 2,500 wedding gifts from around the world.
