First edition of the autobiography of the famous publisher and co-owner of Philedelphia’s Public Ledger; from the library of General William Tecumseh Sherman. Duodecimo, bound in contemporary blue half calf with gilt titles, tissue-guarded frontispiece portrait of George W. Childs. General William Tecumseh Sherman and his son P. T. Sherman’s booklates to the front pastedown. Association copy, inscribed by the author on the front flyleaf, “General W.T. Sherman with the compliments of George W. Fields February 1890.” In very good condition with light rubbing, inscription in pencil to the front panel listing the pages with General Sherman’s mentions in the book. General Sherman’s library was inherited by P. T. Sherman, who transferred the library to his niece, Eleanor Sherman Fitch, the granddaughter of General Sherman through his eldest daughter, Maria “Minnie” Ewing Sherman Fitch, before he died. Until now, the book was held at the family estate in Washington County, Pennsylvania. An exceptional association.
George William Childs was an American publisher who co-owned the Public Ledger newspaper in Philadelphia with financier Anthony Joseph Drexel. A marketing genius, Childs was the first book publisher to use the now ubiquitous "blurb" endorsements by other famous persons and the creator of the now popularized author's book tour.
