Rare autograph letter signed from Rudyard Kipling to R. G. Von Berg. One page on Bateman’s Burwash Etchingham letterhead, the letter reads in full, “Sep. 2 1907 Dear Sir: In reply to your letter of the 28th Aug. I am afraid that ‘Kaspar’s Song In Varda’ is one of my own compositions and that you will not find it in the works of your great poet. Sincerely yours Rudyard Kipling R. G. Von Berg.” Also known as ‘Butterflies,’ ‘Kaspar’s Song in Varda’ was a sister-poem that accompanied Kipling‘s short story ‘Wireless,’ first published in Scribner’s Magazine in 1902 and later collected in Traffics and Discoveries. Kipling claimed the poem to have been a translation of an old Swedish poem (from the Swedish of Stagnelius). Double-matted with a portrait of Kipling. In fine condition. The entire piece measures 9.25 inches by 15.5 inches.
English journalist, short-story writer, poet, and novelist Rudyard Kipling's major works include The Jungle Book (1894), Kim (1901) and many short stories and poems. Kipling was born in India, which inspired much of his work and his innovative stories for children have become timeless classics. Kipling was one of the most popular writers in the British Empire, in both prose and verse, in the late 19th and early 20th centuries and was awarded the Nobel Prize in literature in 1907.
