Chartwell:, 1949.

Rare typed letter signed by Prime Minister Winston S. Churchill to a Lady Aberconway, likely Christobel Aberconway. Octavo, one page on Westerham letterhead, the letter reads in full, ‘Chartwell, Westerham, Kent. “9” March, 1949. “Dear Lady Aberconway,” Thank you for your letter. I think Greenshields may have had in his mind some very beautiful black and white studies of my yellow cat, drawn by Sir William Nicholson. I should be very glad for these to be reproduced.’ Boldly signed by him, “Yours sincerely, Winston S. Churchill.” The studies mentioned here are likely Sir William Nicholson’s pencil sketches of Churchill’s orange cat at Chartwell, Tango. His works ‘A Study of a Marmalade Cat’ were produced in 1934, and Churchill gives permission for the reproduction of these drawings in this letter. In very good condition with mail folds. Double matted and framed with a photograph of Churchill. The entire piece measures 21.6 inches by 13 inches.

Following the resignation of Neville Chamberlain on May 10th 1940, Winston S. Churchill became Prime Minister of England and took the lead in warning about Nazi Germany and in campaigning for rearmament. His speeches and radio broadcasts helped inspire British resistance, especially during the difficult days of 1940–41 when the British Commonwealth and Empire stood almost alone in its active opposition to Adolf Hitler. A non-academic historian, artist, and prolific writer, Churchill won the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1953 for his overall, lifetime body of work.
