Victor Hugo (1802–1885) remains one of France's most celebrated writers, renowned for his contributions to literature during the Romantic era. His works, which included novels, plays, and poetry, often explored themes of justice, social inequality, and human resilience. Hugo's masterpiece Les Misérables (1862) delved into the lives of marginalized individuals, weaving a powerful narrative of redemption and revolution. Similarly, Notre-Dame de Paris (1831), known in English as The Hunchback of Notre-Dame, combined Gothic elements with a critique of societal flaws. Hugo’s poetry collections, such as Les Contemplations (1856), revealed his lyrical genius and personal reflections on love, loss, and spirituality.
