Munich: Verlag Fred Jahn, 1989. First edition of one of the most revealing collections of the photographic work of Gerhard Richter. Folio, original cloth. Signed and dated in the year of publication on the half-title page, “Gerhard Richter 14.10.89.” Fine in a fine dust jacket.
"In Atlas, Richter not only reveals much of his life, and the basis for many of his paintings, but he also summarizes the concerns of many of the leading makers of artist's books from Ruscha and LeWitt to Boltanski and Feldmann....the ultimate artist's book." (Parr & Badger, Photobook II). Richter has been hailed as an artist for contributing to the revival of popular interest in painting. His 2005 exhibition declared his place as a momentous artist amongst those of the 20th century. Richter has been the recipient of numerous distinguished awards: the Staatspreis of the State Nordrhein-Westfalen, Düsseldorf, in 2000; the Wexner Prize, 1998; the Praemium Imperiale, Japan, 1997; the Golden Lion of the 47th Biennale, Venice, 1997; the Wolf Prize in Israel; the Kaiserring Prize der Stadt Goslar, Mönchehaus-Museum für Moderne Kunst, Goslar, Germany, 1988; the Oskar Kokoschka Prize, Vienna, 1985; the Arnold Bode Prize, Kassel, 1981; and the Junger Western Art Prize, Germany, 1961. Indeed, his popularity has been such that Cologne made him an honorary citizen in 2007.
