Quarto, bound in three quarters morocco by Bayntun Bindery with gilt titles and tooling to the spine in six compartments within raised bands, top edge gilt, marbled endpapers, illustrated with sixteen colored plates by E. A. Cox including tissue-guarded frontispiece of Queen Elizabeth. In near fine condition.

Charles Kingsley’s romantic story of Elizabethan adventure “is in some ways his most characteristic book, and the descriptions of Devonshire scenery, his hearty sympathy with the Elizabethan heroes, and the unflagging spirit of the story, make the reader indifferent to its obviously one-sided view of history” (DNB).
