Regarded as the chief representative of the Victorian age of poetry, English poet and dramatist, Alfred Lord Tennyson succeeded William Wordsworth as Poet Laureate in 1850 and remains one of the most popular English poets. The Princess; A Medley tells of a beautiful and accomplished princess who forswears the world of men and founds a women's university where men are forbidden to enter. Several later works have been based upon the poem, including Gilbert and Sullivan's comic opera Princess Ida.
