Two of France's most renowned and prolific writers, Alexandre Dumas and Guy de Maupassant were both masters of literature. Maupassant is remembered for his mastery of the short story form, and as a representative of the Naturalist school which depicted human lives and destinies and social forces in disillusioned and often pessimistic terms; while Dumas' thrilling historical novels of high adventure, including the Three Musketeers and Count of Monte Cristo, have been adapted since the early 20th century into nearly 200 films.
