Rare printed Treasury Department report detailing projected expenditures by the federal government for the year 1794. Quarto, 20 pp. Includes reporting on sources of revenue, duties on imports and tonnage, provision for payment of interest on balances due to the individual states, as well as interest on the public debt. Also printed is expenditures for the Civil List for the various branches and departments of the federal government, including the executive, both houses of Congress, the War Department, Indian Department, etc. Finally, printed toward the rear is a list of the revenue and appropriations for 1789-93, the amount of duties and tonnage accrued from January-June 1793, and monies transferred to the United States out of the proceeds from foreign loans. In very good condition. Rare with only one example appearing at auction in the last 80 years.

Second American edition of The Federalist, “without question the most important commentary on the Constitution, the most significant American contribution to political theory, and among the most important of all American books” (Reese). Octavo, bound in full tree calf with elaborate period-style gilt tooling to the spine, morocco spine labels lettered in gilt, gilt scrolling to the front and rear panels, gilt turn-ins. marbled endpapers. This is the first edition in which Hamilton, Madison, and Jay are attributed as the original authors in this Preface (though attribution for individual essays were not published until Gideon’s 1818 edition) and the last edition to be issued during Hamilton’s lifetime (Sabin). “The 1802 edition also identified the authors of The Federalist and what essays they had supposedly written. Clearly edited by Hamilton partisans, it gives more authorial credit to Hamilton than modern scholarship cedes him” (Reese). Housed in a custom matching half tree calf clamshell box with with elaborate period-style gilt tooling to the spine and morocco spine labels lettered in gilt. In very good, contemporary marginalia. An exceptional example of this landmark book.

Original swatch from Martha Washington’s white silk wedding dress, given by her as a gift to Mrs. Alexander Hamilton, Elizabeth, and handed down through generations of the Hamilton family. The silk swatch measures roughly 2.75 inches by 2 inches, mounted on a stiff paper card inscribed in pencil on the verso, “A bit of Martha Washington’s wedding dress Wh. was Mrs. Alex Hamilton’s” in the hand of Hamilton’s granddaughter-in-law, Mrs. Allan McLane Hamilton, and from her collection. Hamilton’s grandson, Allan McLane Hamilton was a prominent psychiatrist and founded the New York Psychiatric Society. In 1910, he published The Intimate Life of Alexander Hamilton, which was published by Scribner & Sons. In very good condition. Housed in an antique leather carrying case. An exceptional association with wonderful provenance.
