Rare second English edition of Leoni's English translation of Palladio's monumental work, containing new typesetting, but reusing the same plates from the first edition. Folio, two volumes bound in full contemporary polished calf with gilt titles and ruling to the spine in six compartments within raised bands, double gilt ruling and decorative stamping to the front and rear panels, engraved frontispiece portrait of Palladio, illustrated with 104 numbered engraved plates on 203 leaves (including 15 double-page plates), as well as 12 engraved in-text plates. Armorial bookplate to the pastedown of each volume. In very good condition.

The card contains Fitzgerald's printed signature on the upper left "Scott Fitzgerald" and the inscription "Sacred to the memory of Xmas 1911" in the center; in the lower left Fitzgerald has drawn three small irregular ovals, with the explanation that they are "Tears." In the right portion, he had evidently mounted a small piece of mistletoe [no longer present] as he has inscribed "The Misletoe"…

Colonel Nicholas Campanole was aide to Gen. John J. Pershing during the Mexican campaign of 1914 and served on his staff during World War I. Physically retired in 1937, Gen. George Patton recalled him to active duty in 1942 and he remained with Patton as assistant chief of staff throughout World War II. In very good condition.
