Colonel Taliaferro Preston Shaffner wrote several histories of the United States Civil War and was active in a non-political, non-sectarian international fraternal order called the 'Independent Order of Odd Fellows.' A self-taught American inventor and entrepreneur, Shaffner was responsible for the creation of several methods of blasting with nitroglycerine and other high explosives. As an associate of Samuel Morse, he additionally published 'Shaffner's Telegraph Companion,' a monthly journal devoted to Morse's telegraphy, from 1854 to 1855.
