First edition of this autobiography of an actress; from the library of Philemon Tecumseh Sherman. Octavo, original blue cloth, frontispiece portrait of Mary Anderson de Navarro, illustrated with seventeen black and white photographs. Presentation copy, lengthily inscribed by the author to P. T. Sherman, “To P.T. Sherman with best wishes & kind greetings from Mary Anderson de Navarro In constant remembrance of my valued friend General Sherman the greatest personality I ever met, and I have known most of the great men of my time January 1937.” Accompanied by an autograph letter signed from the author to Mr. Sherman thanking him for an inscription in a book, two pages on Tel. No. 6 Broadway stationary. In very good condition with light rubbing. General William Tecumseh Sherman’s son P. T. Sherman was a lawyer in New York, specializing in labor and insurance, and was elected a member of the New York Board of Alderman in the late 1880s. In the early 1900s, he was appointed the New York Commissioner of Labor. He transferred his library to his niece, Eleanor Sherman Fitch, the granddaughter of General Sherman through his eldest daughter, Maria “Minnie” Ewing Sherman Fitch, before he died. Until now, the book was held at the family estate in Washington County, Pennsylvania.
Mary Anderson was an American theatre actress who performed in the United States and London in productions of 'The Lady of Lyons,' 'Pygmalion and Galatea,' 'Comedy and Tragedy,' 'Romeo and Juliet,' and 'The Winter's Tale.' Having left the stage after a nervous breakdown, Anderson married Antonio Fernando de Navarro and continued to cultivate an interest in music outside of theater, returning only for number of fund-raising performances during World War I in Worcester, Stratford and London.
