American steel magnate Charles Michael Schwab began his career in the steel industry as an engineer in Andrew Carnegie's steelworks, where he rose through the ranks and, at the age of 35, he became president of the Carnegie Steel Company. After negotiating the secret sale of Carnegie Steel to a group of New York–based financiers led by J. P. Morgan, Schwab left to run the Bethlehem Shipbuilding and Steel Company in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, which under his leadership, became the second-largest steel maker in the United States, and one of the most important heavy manufacturers in the world.
