The period from 1870 to 1874 saw a great number of countries begin the issuance of postcards. The first known printed picture postcard, with an image on one side, was created in France in 1870 and private advertising cards started appearing in the United States around 1873, and qualified for a special postage rate of one cent. The backs of these private cards contained the words "Correspondence Card", "Mail Card" or "Souvenir Card" and required two-cent postage if they were written upon.
