Victorian poet Elizabeth Barrett Browning's prolific output between 1841 and 1844 made her a rival to Tennyson as a candidate for poet laureate upon the death of William Wordsworth. Her work had a major influence on prominent writers of the day, including the American poets Edgar Allan Poe and Emily Dickinson. Encompassing nine books written in blank verse, her epic poem Aurora Leigh is widely considered one of the greatest long poems of the nineteenth century.
