First published in 1906 and based on the author's personal experiences teaching at Matsuyama Middle School in Shikoku, Natsume Sōseki's classic novel follows the story of young master Botchan, a reckless and rambunctious youth who, after his father's death, devotes himself to the study of physics and later accepts a position, himself, as a middle school mathematics teacher in Matsuyama. Despite his quick-tempered and arrogant nature, Botchan also harbors an unshakeable faith in honesty and integrity, and ultimately makes a sincere effort to do the right thing, this strong moral grounding is his defining characteristic. The book remains one of the most popular novels in Japan, particularly among Japanese school children, and has been translated into several languages.
