WASHBURN, R.M. [Calvin Coolidge].

Item Number: 110538

Boston: Small, Maynard and Company, 1923.

First edition of this classic biography of Calvin Coolidge, written by close friend and colleague, R.M. Washburn. Octavo, original cloth, illustrated, frontispiece. Signed by Calvin Coolidge on the front free endpaper, “Without Recourse Calvin Coolidge.” In near fine condition. Uncommon signed.

In the preface to this work, author R.M. Washburn states, "This first biography is an attempt to write of a personal friend as he is. He has a marked individuality which appeals and stimulates an honest, human story; history and romance, fact and fancy. This human story ventures to touch upon his particular individualities, not only for the truth but also to lighten the portrait with amusement. It analyzes honestly his success and its causes. It also attempts to respect the proprieties of the Presidency. It drives at quality, not quantity, symbolized by the man and by his characteristic caution to the Massachusetts Senate: 'Be Brief'."
