Item Number: 142384

Large portfolio containing a varied collection of approximately 100 original designs for textiles and wallpapers in floral, modern and Jacobean designs, many in an “arte modern” style executed by English designer Cecil Henry Judge. Pencil and pochoir on paper, some hand-painted, all but 15 richly and brightly coloured, most with title caption beneath image, some signed with initials “C.J.” and with design number in margin, sheet size typically 30 inches by 40 inches. These designs were realised using pochoir, an unmechanised stencil technique that places a strong emphasis on hand-colouring since the colour is added directly onto the paper by hand, giving the artist total control over the process. The pochoir technique was perfectly suited for the elegant and extravagant designs typical of Art Nouveau and Art Deco in the early 20th century. The designed include palm trees, golf patterns, modern loops with marguerites and tulips, waterlilies, and abstract and figurative modern designs. In fine condition. Housed in a custom wood portfolio case.

Pochoir, a stencil-based printing technique used to create multicolored prints, was particularly popular in the production of French illustrated pattern books from the late 19th century until the 1930s. The technique created lively images with crisp lines and vibrant colors, and was widely used in fashion journals and illustrated portfolios with designs for architecture, interiors, and textiles. Textile design received much attention during this period, as fashion represented the second-largest export industry and was of great importance to the recovery of a devastated economy after World War I.
