First edition of this work by the chess grandmaster. Octavo, original cloth, illustrated. Presentation copy, inscribed by Larry Evans on the front free endpaper, “To Ambassador Thompson Best wishes Larry Evans March, 1956.” The recipient Llewellyn Thompson was a United States diplomat. He served in Sri Lanka, Austria, and, for a lengthy period, in the Soviet Union where his tenure saw some of the most significant events of the Cold War. He was a key advisor to President John F. Kennedy during the Cuban Missile Crisis. A 2019 assessment described him as ” arguably the most influential figure who ever advised U.S. presidents about policy toward the Soviet Union during the Cold War.” Fine in a very good dust jacket with a few closed tears. An exceptional association.
Llewellyn Thompson was the United States Ambassador to Austria from 19551957 and to Soviet Union from 1957 to 1962 and again between 1967 and 1969. He held a number of other positions throughout his U.S. foreign service career, including being the pivotal participant in the formulation of Johnson administration nuclear weapon non-proliferation policy.
