Dave Pelz (1939–2025) was a pioneering figure in golf instruction, renowned for integrating scientific analysis into the teaching of the short game. After earning a degree in physics from Indiana University, where he played collegiate golf, Pelz spent over a decade as a research scientist at NASA, working on satellite programs including Explorer. His transition to golf instruction was marked by a data-driven approach; he conducted extensive research demonstrating that a significant majority of strokes in golf occur within 100 yards of the green. This insight led him to focus on the short game, culminating in the establishment of the Pelz Golf Institute and the development of innovative training aids and methodologies. Pelz's contributions have profoundly influenced both amateur and professional golfers, with eleven of Pelz's professional students winning a total of 21 major championships. He was named by Golf Digest magazine as one of the 25 most influential instructors of the 20th Century.
