Rare black and white photograph of American in World War I fighter ace Edward “Eddie” Rickenbacker. Inscribed by Rickenbacker, “With best wishes to Jerome Miller Capt. E. V. Rickenbacker.” With the original typed transmittal letter also signed by Rickenbacker on his Cadillac Motor Company letterhead dated May 6, 1929 which reads, ‘My dear Mr. Miller:- As requested in yours of recent date, you will find enclosed autographed photograph of myself in uniform. Note your interest in my hobby, both past and present, and would say that in boyhood my favorite one was to play hookey from school and skating. Following that period, it developed into racing, and at present my hobby is golf and aviation. Trusting this is the information desired, I remain Very truly yours, “E. V. Rickenbacker” Asst. General Sales Manager.’ With an additional card signed and dated, “Capt. E.V. Rickenbacker 1929.” In fine condition. Matted and framed, the entire piece measures 14.5 by 11.75 inches. A handsome presentation with noted provenance.
Edward Vernon Rickenbacker was America's most successful fighter ace in World War I. He won a total of 26 aerial victories in 1918 and received the the most awards for valor by an American during the war. He was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross a record eight times, one of which was converted in 1930 to the Medal of Honor. Rickenbacker was discharged from the Army Air Service with the rank of captain in 1919 and worked for General Motors throughout the 1920s.
