American writer and novelist Ernest Hemingway, widely known for his masterpieces A Farewell to Arms and The Sun Also Rises was also an avid big game hunter. On the plains of the African Serengeti in 1933, he ventured through the veld, tracking kudu, buffalo, elephants, leopards, and lions. Hemingway was escorted by the great Philip Percival, who guided his hunting idol, President Theodore Roosevelt, and spent months travelling and gathering inspiration. His novel 'Green Hills of Africa' and short stories 'The Snows of Kilimanjaro' and 'The Short Happy Life of Francis Macomber' draw their spirit from the chance and thrill of the hunt, where doom lives in the prize. Hemingway's experiences in Africa left with him a remarkably deep love for the continent and a great respect for its wildlife, found in each detail of his setting, the shape of his characters, and the theme of his work.
