HUGHES, Langston.

Item Number: 129088

New York: W. W. Norton & Company, Inc., 1962.

First edition of Hughes’ work on the history of the NAACP. Octavo, original cloth, illustrated. Presentation copy, inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper, “For Naomi T. Gray, Sincerely, Langston Hughes.” The recipient, Naomi Thomas Gray, was an African American social activist and member of the NAACP. She served as the first female vice president of the Planned Parenthood Federation of America and helped to found the Black Leadership Forum, the African American Education Leadership Group, the Black Coalition on AIDS and the Sojourner Truth Foster Family Service Agency which placed black children in black foster families. Near fine in a near fine dust jacket. Rare signed and inscribed.

One of Hughes' several works of non-fiction, Fight For Freedom chronicles the history of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, or NAACP. "Fight for Freedom, the first adequate account of the record and accomplishments of the NAACP, is accurate, lucid, interesting, and, as far as space permits, inclusive. No one who reads it can fail to realize how great these accomplishments are and what effect they have had upon the history of our country. It is no exaggeration to say that no group now functioning has had a greater influence on the structure of our society and its mores" (Arthur B. Spingarn, Foreword).
