Frank Borman was an American astronaut, Air Force pilot, and aerospace executive best known for commanding Apollo 8, the first crewed mission to orbit the Moon in December 1968. Alongside James Lovell and William Anders, Borman played a crucial role in proving the feasibility of lunar travel, paving the way for the Apollo 11 Moon landing. The mission also provided the iconic Earthrise photograph, which influenced global perspectives on Earth’s fragility. Before Apollo 8, Borman was part of the Gemini 7 mission, where he contributed to studies on long-duration spaceflight. After retiring from NASA, he served as CEO of Eastern Airlines.
