ROOSEVELT, Franklin D.

Item Number: 101342

Autograph signed letter by Franklin Delano Roosevelt as President. One page on White House letterhead and dated January 28th 1936, the letter reads: My dear Judge Meyer; Thank you ever so much for your kind thought in sending me the “Flying Cloud” etching. It is indeed a lovely thing and I am particularly glad to have it for my collection. Will you not be good enough to tell Mr. Dansford that I think it is very fine work. I am looking forward with pleasure to receiving the other etchings you mention. I am very grateful, too, for your cordial birthday greetings and good wishes. Very sincerely yours, “Franklin D. Roosevelt.” Roosevelt commissioned the first presidential library in the United States, built under his personal direction between 1939 and 1940. The library came to house 16,000 books, 15,000 photographs, 275,000 feet of movie film, and 300 sound recordings. The present letter refers to an etching of the historic clipper ship Flying Cloud which set the world’s sailing record for the fastest passage between New York and San Francisco in 1854 and was acquired by Roosevelt as an addition to his large etching and photograph collection. In near fine condition. Double matted and framed with an engraved portrait of Roosevelt. The entire piece measures 18 inches by 15 inches.
