Based on Herbert Asbury's 1927 book of the same name, the 2002 epic historical drama Gangs of New York was directed by American filmmaker Martin Scorsese and marked the start of a fruitful collaboration between him and the Academy Award-winning actor Leonardo DiCaprio. Set in 1863, the film follows the explosive path of a long-running feud between the native-born Protestant Americans and their Catholic Irish-American counterparts. Released in December of 2002, it grossed over $193 million worldwide and received ten nominations at the 75th Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Best Director for Scorsese and Best Actor for the performance by Daniel Day-Lewis.
