First edition of Hilton’s classic novella about a beloved schoolteacher. Octavo, original cloth. Boldly signed by the author on the front free endpaper, “Sincerely. James Hilton.” Very good in a very good dust jacket.
Originally issued in 1933, as a supplement to the British Weekly, James Hilton's novella Goodbye, Mr. Chips tells the story of a beloved schoolteacher, Mr Chipping, and his long tenure at Brookfield School, a fictional minor British boys' public boarding school located in the fictional village of Brookfield, in the Fenlands. The story was adapted into a 1969 musical film starring Peter O’Toole and Petula Clark, with songs by Leslie Bricusse and an underscore by John Williams.
