After the First World War, the League of Nations assigned a Mandate for the British administration of the territories of Palestine and Transjordan, which had previously been part of the Ottoman Empire for four centuries. In Palestine, the Mandate required Britain to put into effect the 1917 Balfour Declaration's "national home for the Jewish people" alongside the Palestinian Arabs, who composed the vast majority of the local population. Currently, Israeli settlements exist in the West Bank, including East Jerusalem.
