The grandson of France's last reigning monarch, King Louis Philippe, Louis Philippe Albert acquired a claim to the French throne after the death of his father in 1842. Exiled to England after King Louis Philippe was deposed in 1848, he joined the Union cause in the American Civil War along with his younger brother, Prince Robert, Duke of Chartres, serving on the staff of General George McClellan with the rank of Captain. He distinguished himself during the ultimately unsuccessful 1862 Peninsular Campaign, the first large-scale offensive in the Eastern Theater. He resigned from the Union Army, along with his brother, on 15 July 1862. Philippe's history of the Civil War is considered a standard reference work on the subject.
