This lengthy novella centers on an unnamed London telegraphist who becomes involved in the personal lives of the senders of the often cryptic telegrams submitted to her as she sits in the "cage" of the post office. James, himself, frequently sent telegrams and developed the plot of the story based on his own experiences at the telegraphist's office.
