Ivan Konstantinovich Aivazovsky (1817–1900) was a Russian Romantic painter of Armenian descent, widely regarded as one of the greatest maritime artists in history. His work is characterized by its masterful depiction of light, movement, and atmospheric effects, particularly in seascapes that capture the dynamic interplay between the sky and water. Aivazovsky’s technical prowess allowed him to create luminous, almost ethereal representations of the sea, often featuring dramatic storms, shipwrecks, and naval battles. His most famous painting, The Ninth Wave (1850), exemplifies his ability to convey both the beauty and the formidable power of the ocean. Trained at the Imperial Academy of Arts in St. Petersburg, he achieved international recognition, exhibiting his works across Europe and receiving commissions from royalty and military institutions. His prolific career spanned over six decades, during which he produced more than 6,000 paintings, significantly influencing maritime art and inspiring generations of artists.
