Autograph note signed by James Joyce,”Best wishes from the four of us. My respects will follow, J. J.” on an off-white 2.5 inches 2 inches. The “four of us” presumably refers to the Joyce family”James Joyce, his wife Nora Barnacle, and their children Lucia and Giorgio Joyce, which would date this signature to after 1907. Double-matted and framed with a pensive half-length photograph of the author wearing his hat and carrying his walking stick. The entire piece measures 9.75 inches by 13.75 inches. In fine condition.
Joyce's novel Ulysses is "universally hailed as the most influential work of modern times" (Grolier Joyce 69). After working seven years on his masterpiece, Joyce, desperate to find a publisher, turned to Sylvia Beach of Shakespeare and Company in Paris. "Within a month of the publication, the first printing of Ulysses was practically sold out, and within a year Jouce had become a well-known literary figure. Ulysses was explosive in its impact on the literary world (de Grazia, 27).
