During World War II, Japan had an extensive espionage network primarily focused on gathering intelligence in the Asia-Pacific region. This included espionage activities against Allied powers, particularly the United States, China, and the British Empire. The Tokkō, or the Imperial Japanese Army's Kempeitai and the civilian Tokubetsu Kōtō Keisatsu (Special Higher Police), were the main intelligence and security agencies in Japan during this period, acting as Secret Police, suppressing dissent, monitoring civilians, and conducting espionage operations domestically and abroad. In the aftermath of World War II, Japan established new intelligence agencies, such as the Public Security Intelligence Agency (PSIA) and the Defense Intelligence Headquarters (DIH), to address domestic security and military intelligence needs.
