In 1971 Wenner agreed to assign Thompson to cover the 1972 United States presidential election for Rolling Stone, which subsequently appeared as a published book, 'Fear and Loathing on the Campaign Trail '72' in early 1973. Forty years after its original publication, Fear and Loathing on the Campaign Trail ’72 remains a cornerstone of American political journalism. This endorsement in Rolling Stone reflects Thompson's admiration for Jimmy Carter, and he would write of Carter's Law Day address at the University of Georgia on May 4, 1974, “I have never heard a sustained piece of political oratory that impressed me any more than the speech Jimmy Carter made on that Saturday afternoon.”
